    Description

The American Hornbeam, or Carpinus caroliniana, is a versatile and attractive deciduous tree that can enhance any home landscape with its striking appearance and adaptability. Belonging to the Betulaceae family, this tree is native to the eastern United States and is well-suited to a variety of growing conditions, making it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking a low-maintenance yet visually appealing addition to their garden. Featuring a mature height of 20-30 feet and a similar spread, the American Hornbeam boasts a rounded crown and a distinctive fluted trunk. Its leaves are a deep green during the growing season, transforming into a brilliant display of orange, red, and yellow in the autumn. This tree thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers well-drained soils, requiring only moderate watering once established. The American Hornbeam offers numerous benefits. Its adaptability to urban settings makes it a perfect solution for enhancing city gardens or providing shade in suburban yards. The tree's robust nature and seasonal beauty make it a favored choice for those looking to add a touch of natural elegance to their outdoor spaces. In addition to its ornamental value, the American Hornbeam has a rich history of use by Native Americans for crafting tools, underscoring its durability and cultural significance.

    FAQs

How do i know the size of the plant?

As is typical in Nursery and Garden Center sales, the plants are listed by the size of the container in which they are grown. While we are in the process of standardizing how our plants are listed here online, many of them still have the notations from the grower's availability list. Here are some common ones that you will see on our website:

    • 17cm = about 6.5" diameter = 1 gallon container
    • 19cm = about 7.5" diameter = 1 gallon container
    • G1 = 1 gallon container
    • G2 = 2 gallon container
    • G3 = 3 gallon container

The size of the actual plant will vary greatly based on the plant, season, and growing stage. In some cases we can provide some more details from the grower as requested.
