    Description

The Cortland apple tree produces medium to large, bright red fruit with crisp, snow-white flesh that resists browning—ideal for fresh eating, salads, and baking. This cold-hardy cultivar thrives in Zones 4-7, making it perfect for northern climates. Developed in New York in 1898, Cortland is a McIntosh cross known for its sweet-tart flavor with subtle strawberry notes. Trees reach 12-15 feet at maturity and require a pollenizer for optimal fruit set. Harvest in late September to early October. Self-sterile; plant with compatible varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, or McIntosh for cross-pollination. Excellent disease resistance and consistent yields make Cortland a reliable choice for orchards and home gardens alike.

    FAQs

How do i know the size of the plant?

As is typical in Nursery and Garden Center sales, the plants are listed by the size of the container in which they are grown. While we are in the process of standardizing how our plants are listed here online, many of them still have the notations from the grower's availability list. Here are some common ones that you will see on our website:

    • 17cm = about 6.5" diameter = 1 gallon container
    • 19cm = about 7.5" diameter = 1 gallon container
    • G1 = 1 gallon container
    • G2 = 2 gallon container
    • G3 = 3 gallon container

The size of the actual plant will vary greatly based on the plant, season, and growing stage. In some cases we can provide some more details from the grower as requested.
